Historical record of a Faroese father-son pair
Earlier this year we wrote about a unique pair of players from the Faroe Islands, Atli Gregersen (father) and Árni Atlason (son).
This is the only father-son pair in the current world football playing together for same club at the top level.
Few days ago, the family duo set a world record by playing together in 4 matches of a major international club tournament (Conference League). Previously, no other similar couple had been able to do this.
In the entire history of football, this is the 4th father-son pair to feature together in major international club competitions.
The very first to do this were two Alexey Eremenkos, the naturalized Finns. In 2002-03 they played for HJK Helsinki 3 matches together in qualifying for the UEFA Cup and Champions League.
The Mikkelsen duo, Jákup (father) and Poul (son), who represented the club Fuglafjördur from the Faroe Islands in 2013-14, also stopped at 3 qualifying matches.
Remarkably, both just mentioned pairs took part in 2 different seasons of European competitions.
Also, father and son Brunswijk from Suriname played one match together in the CONCACAF League in 2021.
And now a new pair from the northern archipelago has updated the historical record.
Details are in the table. In the right column is the number of minutes spent together by father and son on the pitch in a given match.
We must also mention that Atli Gregersen and Árni Atlason have also established couple of weeks ago a new world record of XXI century for most common father-son games in all competitions (38 at the moment).
