CURRENT EVENTS IN THE MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

The Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top professional league in the United States and Canada, commenced its 25th season on the February 29, 2020 and was scheduled to end the regular season on October 4, 2020 while the playoffs were planned to begin in October 2020 and end with the MLS CUP 2020 on November 7, 2020.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the season was abruptly suspended on the march 12, 2020 only after 2 rounds of matches played in both the western and the eastern conference. 

On March 19, the season was extended till May 10, 2020 and again, recently on April 17, the suspension was further extended to June 8, 2020

Worthy of note is the introduction of two teams, Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC into the 2020 season which further expands the MLS to a total of 26 teams across 2 conferences.

CURRENT EVENTS IN THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER   LEAGUE SEASON

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is the top division of women’s soccer in the United States.

The 2020 regular season was initially scheduled to kick off on April 18, 2020 and was to be completed on October 18, 2020 while the playoff semifinals were planned for November 8 and the NWSL Championship on November 14, 2020.

However, due to the covid-19 pandemic, on the March 12, 2020, the preseason matches were cancelled. And on March 20, 2020 it was announced that the regular season will be delayed.

Recently, on April 4, 2020, the NWSL announced the extension of its training moratorium for all clubs through and including Tuesday May 5, 2020 as the league places the safety of players, staff and fans as top priority.

THE DUTCH SEASON OFFICIALLY CANCELLED

The 2019/20 season in the Netherlands has been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, with leaders Ajax Amsterdam denied the league title and no relegation from the Eredivisie and no promotion !

The Dutch Government extended a ban on major public events by 4 months, leading to the cancellation. Ajax (picture) was the leader on 56 points with AZ Alkmaar , Ajax had the best goal difference.

The Eredivisie has never ended a season without a champion being named since it was formed in 1956.

-       EURO 2020 : POSTPONED FOR A YEAR

-       Champions League : SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY

-       Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1 : SUSPENDED INDEFINITELY

-       Bundesliga : NO FANS FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON

-       Serie A : SUSPENDED UNTIL 3 MAI

-       Copa America : POSTPONED UNTIL 2021

-       MLS : SUSPENDED THROUGH 8 JUNE
