Longest unbeaten runs in English top division
Manchester City have just gone 32 games unbeaten in Premier League (23 wins, 9 draws). The run has been broken on 2 November with a defeat vs Bournemouth (1-2).
It’s new top-flight club record that surpassed the previous City’s similar streak of 30 games between April 2017 and January 2018.
The longest unbeaten run in English top-flight history overall is held by Arsenal between May 2003 and October 2004, with Arsène Wenger’s side going astonishing run of 49 matches without a Premier League defeat.
38 of these 49 games came in a single season (2003-04), as Arsenal’s “Invincibles” went an entire campaign without defeat – the only Premier League team to do so.
Before that, “Gunners” had another long streak of 30 games without a defeat in between December 2001 and October 2002, also under Wenger who is still the only coach in Premier League history to have secured 2 unbeaten runs of 30+ games.
The first ever team in English top division ro reach this mark, Burnley enjoyed it in their champion 1920-21 season. Curiously, their pioneer run came following a 4-match losing streak, with 3 of those coming in the opening 3 games of the campaign.
Chelsea, across their 40-game unbeaten run between 2004 and 2005, kept as many as 24 clean sheets.
Overall, there have now been 11 instances of teams going 30+ games unbeaten in English top-flight history, of which 6 have come in the Premier League era and 5 before its foundation.
