ERLING HAALAND'S HAT TRICKS
Haaland’s back-to-back hat-tricks
Erling Haaland has scored hat-tricks in last two Premier League games for Manchester City. This is already second such feat in his City career.
Thus, Norwegian “Cyborg” equalled the achievement of Harry Kane who was the only Premier League player before with 2 back-to-back hat-tricks. Kane did it for Spurs within the same year (2017).
There are now 9 cases of back-to-back hat-tricks in EPL history since its foundation in 1992. They are listed in the table.
Les Ferdinand (1993) was the first to score trebles in two consecutive games. Notably, he did it in the space of just 3 days.
Ian Wright (1994) is the only one to score both hat-tricks in away games.
Didier Drogba’s feat (2010) is also special because he spanned it to 2 different seasons (final game of 2009-10 and starting one in 2010-11).
Thierry Henry achieved the feat in two appearances, nearly a month apart, that were consecutive for him personally but not for his club (Arsenal). In all other 8 cases, this coincided.
Some more curious statistics regards Haaland.
*He has now scored 70 goals in 69 Premier League games for Man City, almost twice more(!) than any other player for the period since his debut. The next is Mohamed Salah with 40.
*Already at the start of his third EPL season, Erling amassed 8 hat-tricks. He is joint-fourth in this, only behind Sergio Agüero (12), Alan Shearer (11) and Robbie Fowler (9).
*Haaland takes just 8.6 games average for a hat-trick, an amazing figure: about 4 times fewer (!) than other big scorers.
*Both his back-to-back hat-tricks, he completed on same day, 31 August (in 2022 and 2024).
*He is now the first player to score 7 goals in the opening 3 matches of a single EPL campaign, surpassing Edin Dzeko who scored 6 goals (as well for Man City) in 2011-12.
*He is also the first player in EPL history to score 2 hat-tricks within 3 first match-days of the same season. The only precedent overall occurred in third tier of English football in 1994-95 (Paul Jewell for Bradford).
