The statistics on Copa America 2024 final games (14-15 July)

Third place match. Canada vs Uruguay 2-2 (penalties 3-4)

*In both editions of the Copa América hosted by a CONCACAF country, a team from that confederation participated in the third-place match (United States in 2016, Canada in 2024).

*Uruguay returned to the Copa America podium after 4 editions of their absence there (2015, 2016, 2019, 2021). The last time they were in top 3 in 2011 (when they became champions).

*These Copa America bronze medals are the first for Uruguay in 20 years. The previous time they finished third in 2004.
In total, they now have 9 sets of bronze medals in competition’s history (also in 1921, 1922, 1929, 1937, 1947, 1953, 1957, 2004). 

*Luis Suárez became the oldest scorer in the history of the Copa América (37 years 171 days); he surpassed the legendary Argentine Ángel Labruna (37 years 123 days). 

*It was the 4th edition of Copa Ameruca in which “El Pistolero” found the net (also in 2011, 2019, 2021).

*Argentina became the team with most Copa América titles (16), surpassing Uruguay with 15.

*For the 5th time, Argentina won the Copa América consecutively (in 1927-1929, 1945-1946-1947, 1957-1959, 1991-1993 and 2021-2024).

*For the 4th time Argentina played an extra time in a Copa América final (in previous cases, they won against Brazil in 1937 and lost on penalties against Chile in 2015 and 2016).

*Argentina were in the final in 6 of the 9 editions of Copa América in the XXI century (also 2004, 2007, 2015, 2016, 2021). No other team participated in more than half of the finals played in that period.

*For the first time, Argentina faced Colombia in a Copa América final. The Albiceleste had only faced 3 different rivals in their 7 previous finals: Brazil (4), Chile (2) and Mexico. 

*Argentina won all 5 Copa América knockout games against Colombia, also in 1993 (quarterfinals), 2004 (semifinals), 2015 (quarterfinals) and 2021 (semifinals).

*Colombia have stopped their longest ever undefeated streak (28 games: 22 wins and 6 draws).

*Lionel Messi, became the oldest player to start a Copa América final (37 years 20 days) in the XXI century. 

*Messi, unfortunately replaced midway through the second half due to injury, won his 4th senior trophy with Argentina, after Copa America 2021, Finalissima 2022 and World Cup 2022. He has also won with Olympic team the Summer Olympics in 2008.

*Lautaro Martinez, having netted the winning goal, finished the tournament as its top scorer (5 goals).
His total in Copa America is now 10; among active players only three scored more in the competition: Eduardo Vargas (Chile), Paolo Guerrero (Peru) and Messi (all 14).
