Copa América 2024: Messi set new record already in the opening game

In the Copa América 2024 opening game Argentina vs Canada (2-0), Lionel Messi has broken a competition’s record that was 71 years old.
He surpassed the legendary Chilean goalkeeper Sergio Livingstone to become the player with the most games played (35) in the Copa América.
Here is the historical ranking of the tournament. It includes the players with 25+ games. In total, there are 14 such players at the moment, 5 of them active: Messi, Guerrero and Bravo take part in this edition while Medel and Yotún don’t.

Also, Messi made an assist in the first game of this edition. He assisted in all 7 editions in which he took part: there are no precedents for this in the history of tournament.
In total, Messi has 18 assists in Copa América now: much more than any other player amassed over the last 40 years.
