IFFHS CONTINENTAL NEWS - UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Picture *Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) has scored after 1 minute 48 seconds. Only one player did it earlier against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu stadium in UCL history: Mario Mandzukic for Juventus on 11 April 2018 (1 minute 17 seconds).

Statistics on Champions’ League quarterfinals (April 9)

Real Madrid vs Manchester City 3-3

*Manchester City continue their unique series, scoring straight 3 goals in each of their 9 Champions League games this season.

*The Pep Guardiola’s team has gone already 22 games in a row without losing in the Champions League.
It is the 2nd longest streak in the history of the competition, only behind the 25 consecutive unbeaten games of Manchester United between 2007 and 2009.

*In the meantime, Manchester City have broken their series of 10 wins in Champions League (longest ever for any English team).
The last two games that City have not won were both played at the Bernabéu (the previous was 1-1 on 9 May 2023).

*Real Madrid continue their series of Champions League knockout home games with scoring goals (now 34 in a row): the best such streak in the competition's history.

*It was just 2nd knockout stage game in the whole Champions League history with 3+ goals scored in the opening 14 minutes.
The only precedent was in the 2nd leg of 2018-19 edition quarterfinal Manchester City vs Tottenham (4-3) on 17 April 2019 (2-2 after starting 11 minutes).

*The previous case in the Champions League when both sides have scored 3+ goals in the first leg of two-legged knockout stage tie, was also within this rivalry (Manchester City vs Real Madrid 4-3 in the semifinal of 26 April 2022).

*Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) has scored after 1 minute 48 seconds. Only one player did it earlier against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu stadium in UCL history: Mario Mandzukic for Juventus on 11 April 2018 (1 minute 17 seconds).

*Bernardo Silva’s goal became also the 2nd earliest goal in UCL history from direct free kick.
It only concedes to the goal of Mikael Nilsson for Göteborg vs PSV in 1993 (after 1 minute 10 seconds).
The third in this ranking is Jadson’s free kick goal for Shakhtar vs Valencia in 2006 (1 minute 57 seconds).

*Curiously, all last 6 direct free kick goals conceded by Real Madrid in UCL were always at the Bernabéu; also from Del Piero, Kolarov, Schöne, Muriel and Jota.
The last time “Los Blancos” conceded such goal in away game occurred in 2005 (Juninho Pernambucano, Lyon)

*All 3 goals (Bernardo Silva, Foden, Gvardiol) were conceded by Real Madrid from outside the area.
The last time they conceded so many goals such way was on 2 November 2016 in away game vs Legia (Odjidja-Ofoe, Rádovich and Moulin).
The last time at Bernabéu this happened on 29 February 2000 vs Bayern (Scholl, Effenberg and Fink).

*The last time overall to see 3 goals from outside the area in a Champions League knockout phase match scored by a team was on 16 April 2019. Barcelona did it against Manchester United (3-0).

*Joško Gvardiol's goal is his first for Manchester City. The last one in his career was scored yet for his previous club RB Leipzig  (on 11 March 2023 vs Borussia Gladbach).

*Rodrygo has reached 20 goals (all for Real Madrid) in UCL at the age of 23 years 91 days.
Only Raúl in the club history reached this mark earlier (at 22 years 297 days).

Arsenal vs Bayern 2-2

*Arsenal have broken their disastrous series in this rivalry: they were defeated with same score 5-1 in all three previous UCL games vs Bayern.

*Leandro Trossard (Arsenal) has scored in each of his first 4 home appearances in UCL.
He is only 4th player in the history of competition to do so, after Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus) in 1995-96, Frederic Kanoute (Sevilla) in 2007-08, and Oscar (Chelsea) in 2012-13.

*So prolific day (10 goals in total) in UCL quarterfinal first legs was last seen on 5 April 2011 (Real Madrid vs Tottenham 4-0,  Inter vs Schalke 2-5).
