RIP ANDREAS BREHME


Former German national player Andreas Brehme is dead. He died at the age of 63.

Andreas Brehme shot the German national soccer team to the title at the 1990 World Cup in Italy by converting a penalty. The Hamburg native won the German championship with FC Bayern Munich in 1987 and was named Footballer of the Year in Italy in 1989. “Andi” Brehme celebrated victory in the UEFA Cup with Inter Milan in 1991. With 1. FC Kaiserslautern he won the DFB Cup in 1996 and, as a Bundesliga promoted team, the German championship in 1998. In the same year he ended his career as a football player.

He played professionally for Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, FC Bayern München, Inter Milan and Real Zaragoza. Brehme played 86 international matches for the DFB and scored eight goals.

He was one of the best friends of his 1990 World Cup winner coach Franz Beckenbauer, who died last month.
