27 -   ARGENTINA – SOUTH AFRICA  2-2    (GROUP G)



 Thembi Kgatlana scored in 2019 and 2023


Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin. 8 834 spectators. Half time : 0-1. Referee : Ana Maria Keighley (New zealand). Goals for Argentina : Sophia Braun (74’), Romina Nunez (79’). For South Africa : Linda Motlhalo (30’), Thembi Kgatlana (66’).

 

FACTS AND STATS

 

-       Argentina looked lost and South Africa to have their first win ever in the World Cup 20 minutes before the end of the game. But two goals of Braun and Nunez gave them a draw ! So each team looked forward to earn their first win ever in a World Cup final stage !

-       South Africa ended the serie of 4 consecutive defeats at the World Cup (3 in 2019, 1 in 2023).

-       Argentina scored all their 7 goals in the World Cup History in the second half time ! 

-       Winner of the African Nations Cup for the first time ever in 2022, South Africa was directly qualified for the World Cup.

-       For her second World Cup ever (after 2019), Thembi Kgatlana scored already her second World Cup goal. She scored the unique South Africa’s goal in 2019.

-       It is already the fourth participation for Argentina and captain goalkeeper Vanina Correa after 2003, 2007 and 2019. 

 

 

 

25 -   ENGLAND – DENMARK      1-0      (GROUP D)


Sydney Football Stadium.  40 439 spectators. Hal time : 1-0. Referee : Tess Olofsson (Sweden). Goal for England : Lauren James (6’).

 

FACTS AND STATS

 

-       England made it two wins from two, but they had hard to work, scoring their first goal (without penalties) since 5 hours !

-       Lauren James was drafted in from the start and she needs only 6 minutes to score a wonderful goal.

-       With two less than convincing performances, England won 6 points of 6 and is already qualified for the knock out stage.

-       Keira Walsh was injured after 37 minutes and replaced by Laura Coombs, who made her debut in the World Cup.

-       Pernilla Harder, IFFHS World’s Best player 2020, came only back on the field end April after a long injury. Denmark’s captain was dangerous but not decisive.

 

 

 

26 -  CHINA – HAITI      1-0         (GROUP D)



 Wang Shuang's penalty was decisive.


Coopers Stadium, Adelaide.  12 675  spectators. Half time :  0-0  . Referee : Marta Huerta de Aza (Spain). Goal for China : Wang Shuang (73’ penalty).  Red card : Zhang Rui (China, 29’)

 

FACTS AND STATS 

 

-       China overcame a first half red card to defeat Haiti in a very contested game where Haiti deserved one or more penalties.

-       China lost all opening games in the World Cups 2015, 2019 and 2023 with 0-1, and won all the second games at the same World Cups 1-0 !

-       Zhang Rui celebrated her 168th international cap with a red card.

-       Haiti is the youngest team of the World Cup 2023 with an age average of 22,8 years.

-       China was qualified in all 7 World Cups for the ko stage. With the win today, it is again possible.

-       Melchie Dumornay, Haiti’s best, was injured and came only in the second half on the field. It was not enough because of China’s Goalkeeper Yu Zhu, who made a fantastic save !
