3 -  NIGERIA – CANADA  0-0  (GROUP B)

FACTS AND STATS

 

-       Chiamaka Nnadozie was the hero of the game. Nigeria’s Goalkeeper saved the penalty of Sinclair to give one point to her team.

-       Christine Sinclair (324 international caps) hold already many records. If she scored the penalty, she would become the first player in History (men and women ) to score at 6 different World Cups. She can do it in the next days …

-       Deborah Abiodun was the first in the World Cup 2023 to receive a red card. Nigeria’s midfielder was sent off in the 98’ minute.

-       Canada won only one of their 6 last games this year, the Olympic Games winner 2021 missed too many chances.

-       For Nigeria, it is already the ninth participation to a World Cup final stage, one more than Canada. Best peformance for Nigeria : quarter final in 1999. For Canada : 4th place in 2003.

FACTS AND STATS

-       It was the first match in World Cup History for Philippines ! The team leaded by captain Hali Long (74 caps) made a honorable performance.

-       After 2015, Switzerland was qualified for their second World Cup Final stage ! Ramona Bachmann, already present in 2015, scored the first goal scorer in 2023 for Switzerland and her 58th in 132 caps.

-       Anna Maria Crnogorcevic played her 146th international game for Switzerland today.

-       Katrina Guillou is the most known player of Philippines team. She plays in Pitea (Sweden) with success.

5 -  SPAIN – COSTA RICA  3-0  (GROUP C)

FACTS AND STATS

 

-       La Roja’s formidable form continued with a sovereign 3-0 opening game against Costa Rica. Spain lost only one of their last 15 games (13 wins, 1 draw), included 12 clean sheets.

-       3 goals in 6 minutes and the success was guaranteed for the Spanish team, where Aitana Bonmati was brilliant.

-       Amelia Valverde is the national coach of Costa Rica since 2015, when her team realized a great performance against Spain (1-1). She is only 36 and already 8 years at the head of Costa Rica with 2 qualifications for World Cup final stages !

-       When Alexia Putellas replaced young star Salma Paralluelo, it was already her 101th international cap with Spain. The Ballon d’Or and IFFHS World Player 2021 and 2022 is coming back after her long injury.

-       Daniela Solera , Costa Rica’s Goalkeeper, was able to prevent more damage though as she superbly denied Jennifer Hermoso from the penalty spot. She made many impressive saves to sensue a respectable defeat.
