The statistics on 2022 World Cup day 17 (6 December)

*Morocco became the 4th African team to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup, after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.

*Morocco coach Walid Regragui became the first ever African coach to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

*Spain became the first team in World Cup history to lose 4 penalty shootouts. The next are England and Italy (3 lost shootouts each).

*It was Spain's 5th World Cup penalty shootout, the joint-most of any team, along with Argentina. 

*Morocco have won a penalty shootout for the first time in their history, at any tournament. They took part in 2 shootouts before, both in Africa Cup (lost to Algeria in 1988 and to Benin in 2019).

*Spain have only won 3 World Cup games (out of 11) since winning the title in South Africa (2010): vs Australia, vs Iran and vs Costa Rica.

*All 4 playoff games of Spain with Luis Enrique as a coach included extra-times: vs Croatia, Switzerland and Italy at 2020 Euro 2020, vs Morocco at 2022 World Cup.

*Gavi (Spain) became the youngest player (18 years 123 days) to start a knockout match at the World Cup since Pelé in 1958 (17 years 249 days).

*Portugal (6-1 vs Switzerland) is the first team to score 6+ goals in a World Cup round of 16 game since 5 June 1938 (Hungary vs Indonesia 6-0 and Brazil vs Poland 6-5).

*Switzerland hadn't conceded so many goals in any match since 1963 (1-8 against England in a friendly) and in a competitive match since the 1954 World Cup (5-7 vs Austria).

*Cristiano Ronaldo was not in the starting lineup for a Portugal game at a major tournament (World Cup, Euro) for the first time since 2008 (also vs Switzerland); between these games, he had 31 starts in a row.
