South America statistics on WC 2022 qualifiers of 16 November
*This disappointing 0-0 between Argentina and Brazil became only the 2nd competitive South American “clasico” played in Argentina that ended without goals, after the 0-0 in Rosario in the 1978 World Cup.
*For Argentina, it was already 27th consecutive unbeaten game: the best such active streak in the world, followed by Morocco (23), England (20), France (18), Algeria (17), Egypt (13), Iran (13).
The world record, recently set by Italy, contains 37 games (between 2018 and 2021).
*Colombia have played 3 consecutive home qualifiers with 0-0 score (vs Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay).
They equal the record for consecutive zero draws at home in all the history of the World Cup Qualifiers shared now by 7 teams: Latvia (in 1992-1993), France (in 2004-2005), Brazil (in 2008), Bahrain (in 2009-2011), Mexico (in 2013), Mali (in 2016-2017) and now also Colombia (2021).
*Besides that, Colombia equals their worst historical streak in the qualifiers: 5 consecutive games without scoring (as in 2008, on the way to WC 2010).
There is only one worse series in South America (Venezuela linked 7 straight qualifiers without scoring between July 1997 and June 2000).
Considering all games, not only qualifiers, Colombia has in their series two streaks of 6 consecutive games without scoring, the last of them between June and October 2008.
*Uruguay, after 0-3 loss in Bolivia, have gained only 1 point (0-0 against Colombia) and scored only 1 goal (Luis Suárez, in 1-4 against Brazil) in last 5 qualifiers.
It is the worst goals’ and points’ number of “Celeste” in any sequence of 5 games in a row in qualifying for the World Cup.
*Peru have won a qualifier in Venezuela (2-1) for the first time in 24 years (after 3-0 on August 20, 1997).
*Ecuador have won an away game vs Chile for the first time in all the history (including friendlies). Until that, “La Tri” had 4 draws and 16 losses in their 20 away games against “La Roja".
