USA WINS THE GOLD CUP !

 With this goal of Miles Robinson (picture) in the extra time, USA won its seventh Gold Cup title against Mexico this night !


The stats

·       Beginning with the inaugural title in 1991, the U.S. has lifted the Gold Cup on seven occasions. The USA returned the trophy home in 2002 and won again in 2005, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2021 ,advancing to the final on a record 12 occasions: 1991, 1993, 1998, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017, 2019 and 2021.

·       It was the USA 71st match vs Mexico with an advantage for Mexico in the History (36 wins, 15 draws, 20 defeats), but since 2000, USA leads with 20 wins, 6 draws and 5 defeats !

·       In the last two months, USA won the CONCACAF Nations League Final and the Gold Cup Final against Mexico, who was the defendind Gold Cup champion, winning the tournament in a record of eight times.

·       USA won nine consecutive games overall and 14 home games in a row.

Contrary to assurances from dependable sources within the Confederation of Africa Football, CAF, and who had been heavily charged by national media for a confirmation of August 15 as date for the Final Draw for the CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021, the CAF  scribe today ultimately announced the event for Tuesday, August 17 at the Yaounde Conference Centre. In an official letter to Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, president of the Local Organizing Committee of the tournament who is also Cameroon’s Minister for Sports  and Physical Education, Véron Mosengo-Omba also indicates that the event will kick off at 7 p.m., local time. This latest update on the tournament does not however alter how the  seeding of the 24 qualified teams as earlier determined by CAF:

Pot 1: Cameroon, Senegal, Algeria, Nigeria, Morocco, Tunisia.                                                              


Pot 2: Ivory Coast, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ghana.                                                                 


Pot 3: Gabon, Mauritania, Cabo Verde, Zambia, Guinea Bissau, Serra Leone.                                            


Pot 4 : Comoros, Gambia, Malawi, Sudan, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia.

The chemistry of the draw prevents any of the teams from the same pot to fall in the same group during the first round of the tournament to run from January 9 to February 6, 2022.

The FIFA head of Special Events Planning, Antonetta Santagata at the head of an inspection team to Cameroon has expressed satisfaction with preparations at the Draw venue as well as lauded the readiness of two 4-Star and one 5-Star hotels retained to hosts officials and guests to the Final Draw, as they also smiled in approval during a stopover at the Yaounde-Nsimalen International Airport.

Meanwhile, CAF recently validated the choice for mascot and theme song of the tournament that were presented by the Cameroon Local Organizing Committee after the final contest of last May 15. The jury and internet participants  had chosen ‘Mola’, a mascot proposed by Félix Fokoua and the theme song, ‘On est fou de foot’(We’re Football crazy) composed by Roland Julien Ntsa of the Africa Smile team of artists.
