Gyökeres in top 10 of seasonal performances in Liga Primeira
A dramatical saga around Viktor Gyökeres’s transfer to Arsenal has finally come to an end. The new Gunners’ signing made a history in Portugal with 39 goals scored for Sporting in the past league season.
The last so prolific scorer in Portuguese league was Brazilian Mário Jardel in 2001-02: 42 goals for same club.
Curiously, in top 10 goal-scoring performances in the Liga Primeira (see the table), 6 positions are taken just by Sporting players (3 of them belong to the legendary Fernando Peyroteo) while Benfica and Porto get only 2 each.
Héctor Yazalde still owns the record (46 goals) which is already more than 50 year old.
Jardel had outstanding seasons both in Porto and Sporting.
The last columns (Goals Total) means all goals in official competitions for the club within the season.
Gyökeres’s total for Sporting in 2024-25 was 54 goals, just 3 behind the national record of Peyroteo (57 goals in 1937-38).
