IFFHS STATS - CLUB WORLD CUP
Picture : Miguel Merentiel’s goal for Boca became the first that a team from Argentina has scored against an European opponent in an official competition since 2009 when Mauro Boselli netted for Estudiantes vs Barcleona (1-2).
Club World Cup statistics (Group stage, 16 June)
Seattle Sounders vs Botafogo 1-2 (Group B)
*US clubs have not won any of their 4 matches in the history of the Club World Cup (1 draw, 3 losses), making them the nation with the most games played in the competition without ever winning.
Chelsea vs Los Angeles 2-0 (Group D)
*It was the first ever competitive match between clubs from England and the United States.
*Enzo Fernández, one of Chelsea’s goal-scorers, has netted more goals (6) and provided more assists (6) than any other Chelsea player so far in 2025.
He is the only Chelsea player with double figures for goal involvements during this calendar year.
*Pedro Neto (Chelsea) becames the 5th Portuguese goal-scorer at the Club World Cup, after Deco, Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo and Vitinha.
*Two oldest French players at the Club World Cup are now Los Angeles players Olivier Giroud (38 years 259 days) and Hugo Lloris (38 years 172 days). They surpassed by far Karim Benzema that was the oldest before (35 years 361 days).
Boca Juniors vs Benfica 2-2 (Group C)
*After this game, 4 of the last 5 official matches between European and South American clubs ended in a draw after 90 minutes.
*Boca Juniors became the first South American team to score 2+ goals against a European opponent in the Club World Cup (any format) since Boca Juniors themselves against Milan in the 2007 final.
*Benfica became the second European club to trail by at least 2 goals against a non-European team at the Club World Cup, after Manchester United against Vasco da Gama on 8 January 2000.
*Miguel Merentiel’s goal for Boca became the first that a team from Argentina has scored against an European opponent in an official competition since 2009 when Mauro Boselli netted for Estudiantes vs Barcleona (1-2).
*With this goal, Merentiel became the joint-second best Uruguayan scorer in the Boca Juniors history (level with Severino Varela, 43 goals for both).
Only Sergio Martínez (87) has scored more.
*Two Argentinians at once (Angel Di María and Nicolas Otamendi) have scored (for Benfica) against their nation.
There was only one such player in the history of competition before: Lionel Messi who scored for Barcelona on 19 December 2009 vs Estudiantes and on 20 December 2015 vs River Plate.
*Remarkably, both Benfica’s scorers entered the podium for oldest goal-scorers in the CWC history. Otamendi did it at the age of 37 years 125 days, Di María being just 2 days younger.
This podium is now entirely Argentinian, topped by Javier Zanetti who scored for Inter at 37 years 127 days (tiny difference also here).
*7 of the 9 goals in the CWC on Monday were scored by players from South America (Argentina - 4, Uruguay - 1, Brazil - 2).
