ALEXANDER SORLOTH BROKE RECORDS

Sørloth: earliest hat-trick in La Liga

Alexander Sørloth has updated, in space of just few weeks, two La Liga records.
In April, he became the league’s best ever goal-scorer as a substitute in the same season (9 goals “from bench” for Atletico Madrid within this campaign).
On 10 May, in the game vs Real Sociedad, he netted 3 times after just 10 minutos 46 seconds since the kick-off. Thus, he has beaten the previous record that stood as many as 84 years: Valencia’s striker Mundo made a hat-trick, against the same opposition (Real Sociedad) inside 15 minutes (see details in the table).

Moreover, soon after these 3, in 30th minute, the prolific Norwegian added his 4th goal that became the last in this game (final score 4-0). His poker might also pretend to be the earliest in the league history. But, a bit unfortunately for him, Mundo at his above mentioned great performance of 1941 was faster adding his 4th in 20th minute.
So, Sørloth’s poker took only 2nd place in the La Liga’s historical ranking of earliest pokers.

Here is some other aspects of Sørloth’s feat.
*Atlético's earliest hat-trick in La Liga before was scored by Francisco Campos, after 31 minutes against Real Oviedo (5-2) on 10 November 1946.

*Sørloth’s hat-trick (his first 3 of 4 goals) came in space of 3 minutes 57 seconds. It is shortest such interval in the Atlético’s history.
The previous best feat of this category belonged to Kévin Gameiro who scored a hat-trick against Sporting in 2017 inside 4 minutes 45 seconds.

*In La Liga overall, something like this was last produced by Bebeto: 3 goals for Deportivo against Albacete, also in the space of 4 minutes, on 1 October 1995.

*An interval that took Sørloth for his 4 goals vs Real Sociedad made 22 minutes 38 seconds.
Curiously, almost exactly the same space that was needed to him to score his previous poker in La Liga, on 19 May 2024 for Villarreal vs Real Madrid (4-4). Then, it was 22 minutes 32 seconds. Only 6 seconds of difference!
Sørloth’s two named pokers take now 2nd and 3rd places in the ranking of La Liga’s shortest in XXI century, conceding only to Alberto Bueno’s feat who scored 4 times for Rayo Vallecano vs Levante on 28 February 2015 inside only 14 minutes 32 seconds.
The next place in this ranking is taken by Cristiano Ronaldo: 4 goals for Real Madrid vs Granada (9-1) on 5 April 2015 inside 23 minutes 49 seconds.

*It was the 5th case in La Liga history when a player made a poker against his former team (Sørloth played before in Real Sociedad).
The prevous precedents:
Guillermo Gorostiza, for Athletic Bilbao vs Arenas de Guecho on 2 March 1930,
Pahiño, for Deportivo vs Celta on 19 October 1954,
Jesús Orejuela, for Osasuna vs Espanyol on 25 November 1984,
Roberto Soldado, for Valencia vs Getafe on 2 April 2011.

*As you have noticed, Sørloth scored pokers in two consecutive La Liga seasons. In XXI century, only 2 players managed to do so. You will make no mistake suggesting their names:
Lionel Messi: pokers for Barcelona in 2011-12 (2) and 2012-13 (1),
Cristiano Ronaldo: pokers for Real Madrid in 2014-15 (2) and 2015-16 (2).
Within 40 last years of past century, we can find other 3 cases:
Juan Seminario: pokers in 1961-62 and 1962-63 for Zaragoza,
Pichi Alonso: pokers in 1978-79 and 1979-80 for Zaragoza again,
Hristo Stoichkov: pokers in 1990-91 and 1991-92 for Barcelona.
In more ancient times, with their more offensive game and lacking substitutions, this feat was more common.
But also here Sørloth found a way to be original: he made his pokers for different teams!
