AGE RECORDS IN COPA LIBERTADORES

Guerrero and Barcos (picture) beat age records in Copa Libertadores

Aged strikers in the South American football get always bolder. Along with the Dayro Moreno’s feat in Copa Sudamericana (see our recent publication), also in the game of Copa Libertadores match-day 3 Alianza Lima vs Talleres Córdoba (3-2) on 23 April, several competition’s age records have been updated.

*This is the first game in the entire history of the Copa Libertadores in which 2 different players over 40 years old have scored (Alianza’s Hernán Barcos 1 and Paolo Guerrero 2).

*They both are now in the list of multiple scorers in the competition after turning 40 (the table below).
It includes just 4 names so far; half of them are hence the active team-mates.
Hernán Barcos leads this ranking with 7 goals; 5 of them are scored in the current edition (including preliminary rounds). He took the record from  Rogerio Ceni and Roque Santa Cruz (3 goals for each) and pushed it far ahead.

*Paolo Guerrero became the oldest ever player (41 years 111 days) to score a brace in history of the competition.
The Peruvian forward surpassed Edson Puch (Chile), who scored 2 goals for Iquique against Independiente Santa Fe (2-1) on 18 February 2025 at the  age of 38 years 315 days.
Before 2025, the record holder was a Brazilian Ricardo Oliveira of Atlético Mineiro who scored 2 goals vs Danubio (3-2) on 12 February 2019 at 38 years 282 days.

*Guerrero also became the first ever Peruvian player to score for 5 different teams in the Copa Libertadores (8 goals with Corinthians, 7 with Internacional, 2 with Flamengo, 1 with Racing, and now 2 with Alianza Lima).

*In the Copa Libertadores ranking of all-time oldest goal-scorers, Guerrero takes now the 4th position and Barcos the 5th (41 years 11 days), behind only Zé Roberto (42 years 322 days), Roque Santa Cruz (42 years 265 days) and Óscar Aguirregaray (41 years 189 days).
