Another unbeaten run’s record eluded Real Madrid
With a defeat in Bilbao vs Athletic (1-2) on 4 December, Real Madrid missed another chance to update a La Liga record for longest unbeaten run.
Before this loss, “Blancos” have gone 21 consecutive away league games without losing, just 2 fewer than Barcelona’s record of the competition (23 games between March 2010 and April 2011).
*Few weeks ago, Barcelona stopped their arch-rivals one step away from repeating their La Liga record for the longest unbeaten streak overall (43 games), by a famous 4-0 at the Bernabéu.
*The latest defeat in Bilbao means also that Real Madrid missed a chance to pass the whole calendar year without losing away in La Liga like they did in 2016 (0 defeats in 18 away games).
This remains the only such feat in Spanish football in the post-war era. Zaragoza went unbeaten away the year 1939 as well but having only played 3 away games due to civil war break.
*Athletic managed to beat Real Madrid in any La Liga game (home or away) for the first time since 7 March 2015. It was the worst league streak of consecutive games (18) without beating the same opponent in the Athletic club history.
