IFFHS CONTINENTAL NEWS - UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Picture : Robert Lewandowski, a brace scorer, has become just the third player to score 100+ goals (now 101) in the Champions League, after Cristiano Ronaldo (140) and Lionel Messi (129).

Statistics on Champions’ League group stage round 5 (November 26)

*This is joint-second most prolific day in Champions League history: 40 goals (in 9 games).
The same figure (in 8 games) was scored on 21 October 2014.
The record, 44 goals (in 12 games), occurred on 1 October 1997.

*As many as 27 out of 81 matches (exactly one third) played in UCL this edition so far have been resolved by a 3+ goal difference (including 5 of 9 from the yesterday program): anomal high rate.

Bayer Leverkusen vs RB Salzburg 5-0

*Florian Wirtz, at the age of 21, scored his 17th goal in major European club competitions;  only Erling Haaland (23), Kylian Mbappé (21) and Ronaldo (20) have scored more goals before their 22nd birthday, with Wirtz drawing level with Lionel Messi.

Bayern vs Paris St. Germain 1-0

*PSG lost 6 matches in the same calendar year in the European competitions for the first time in club history.

*Manuel Neuer (Bayern) made his 150th appearance in major European competitions; the only goalkeepers to make more are Iker Casillas (179), Gianluigi Buffon (159) and Pepe Reina (157).

Young Boys vs Atalanta 1-6

*Charles De Ketelaere became the first player ever in UCL history:
to score 2+ goals and to provide 3+ assists in the same game,
to be involved in 5+ goals for an Italian team.
The last players directly involved in 5 goals in a single Champions League game were Neymar (Barcelona, in 2016), Serge Gnabry (Bayern, in 2021) and Erling Haaland (Manchester City, in 2023).

*De Ketelaere is also the first player with 3 assists in the first half of a Champions League match since Benoît Cheyrou who did it with Marseille vs Zilina on 3 November 2010.

Barcelona vs Brest 3-0

*Robert Lewandowski, a brace scorer, has become just the third player to score 100+ goals (now 101) in the Champions League, after Cristiano Ronaldo (140) and Lionel Messi (129).

Inter vs RB Leipzig 1-0

*Inter have won 4 consecutive matches without ever conceding for the first time in their history in European Cup/Champions League (they collected a run of 3 twice before, in 1966-67 and 2009-10).

*Inter are the third team without goals against in the first 5 games of a Champions League edition, after Juventus (in 2004-05) and Manchester United (in 2010-11).

Manchester City vs Feyenoord 3-3

*Manchester City have conceded 2+ goals in 6 consecutive games in all competitions for the first time in 61 years.

*Manchester City are the first team in Champions League history to be leading a match by 3 goals as late as the 75th minute and fail to win.

*An English team have failed to win a UCL game in which they were 3+ goals ahead for the third time, after:
Arsenal vs Anderlecht (3-3) on 4 November 2014,
Liverpool vs Sevilla (3-3) on 21 November 2017.

*For the 4th time, a team tied away in the Champions League after overcoming a deficit of 3+ goals, also:
Liverpool (in 2002-03 vs Basel),
Anderlecht (in 2014-15 vs Arsenal),
Inter (in 2023-24 vs Benfica).

*Manchester City are undefeated in their last 34 Champions League home games (29 wins, 5 draws).
Lyon were the last rival to beat them at their home in September 2018.

Sporting Lisbon vs Arsenal 1-5

*Before this game, Arsenal had failed to score in their last 4 Champions League away games.

Slovan Bratislava vs Milan 2-3

*For the first time in UCL, Milan have scored 3+ goals in 3 consecutive games (also vs Club Brugge and vs Real Madrid); considering the European Cup era, this last happened in 1989.

*Tigran Barseghyan (Slovan) became the 2nd Armenian player to score in Champions League, after Henrikh Mkhitaryan (7 goals).

*Marko Tolic (Slovan) became the first player sent off in the Champions League following two yellow cards for dissent since Arturo Vidal in November 2020 for Inter Milan vs Real Madrid.

Sparta Prague vs Atlético Madrid 0-6

*Koke has reached 100 games in Champions League, all with Atlético. He is the first player to reach this figure in the club history.

*Antoine Griezmann also reached 100-match mark in Champions League becoming the 4th French player to do it, after Karim Benzema (152), Thierry Henry (112) and Patrice Evra (108).

*Diego Simeone is the 2nd Non-European person to reach 150 matches in the Champions League as player (40) and coach (110) combined.
The first to do it was his compatriot Lionel Messi (163, all as player).
