North African teams out of service after 11 years

 

The round of 16 ended yesterday, after the seventh and eighth matches of this round.

The Mali team beat the Burkina Faso team with a score of (2-1).

During the second meeting between the two teams in the final phase, after 20 years (2004 in Tunisia), the Malian team won again against its Burkinabé counterpart.

The first meeting took place on the same day (January 30) and was officiated by the Libyan referee, Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, and ended with the score (3-1).

Yesterday's match was officiated by his son, Libyan referee Mutaz Ibrahim Al-Shalmani

Edmond TAPSOBA scored an OG with his left foot in the third minute, it was the second fastest goal scored by a Burkina Faso team and the third fastest goal scored by a Malian team in the final phase.

Then Lassine SINAYOKO doubled the score in the 47th minute with his left foot in the right camp, bringing his account to three goals in the current edition and to 5 goals in the jersey of the Malian team.

Then Bertrand TRAORE reduced the score in the 57th minute with his left foot from the penalty spot, scoring his third goal in the current edition and bringing his international score to 19 goals as his country's fourth top scorer.

Bertrand joined his brother Alain TRAORE as Burkina Faso's top scorer in the finals with 5 goals.

TRAORE became the third Burkinabè player to play 19 African Cup of Nations matches, after his compatriots Charles KABORE and Bakary KONE.

After 11 years and for the sixth time, the Malian team qualifies for the quarter-finals of the competition.


In the 44th match of the current final, the South African team beat its Moroccan counterpart with two goals to zero.

This is the third victory for the South African team against the Moroccan team, and this result is the first out of a total of 6 matches played between the two teams in the final stages.

In a match led by referee Mahmoud Ismail, who became the first Sudanese referee to officiate 3 matches in one edition of the competition.

Evidence MAKGOPA scored in the 57th minute with his left foot, scoring his fourth goal for his country's national team.

This brings the total number of number 9 holders to 10 goals in the current version.

Then, Teboho MOKOENA doubled the score in the 90th + 5 minute with his right foot from a direct free kick to score his fifth international goal and bring the total goals to 9 following shots from outside the penalty area in the current edition.

Note that Achraf HAKIMI missed a penalty in the 85th minute

This is the fourth missed shot out of a total of 17 penalties announced in the current edition

Sofyan AMRABAT was sent off in the 90th + 4 minute, the ninth expulsion in the current edition.

North African teams fail to reach the quarter-finals after 11 years (2013 in South Africa) and for the third time.

The South African team qualified for the quarter-finals for the seventh time, third time since 2013.
