IFFHS CONTINENTAL NEWS - COPA LIBERTADORES

PictureBoca Juniors defender Luis Advíncula has scored his 3rd goal in this Copa Libertadores edition.

Copa Libertadores: statistics on round of 16 games (9-11 August)

*With beating Flamengo in aggregate (0-1 and 3-1), Olimpia became the first team in the history of Copa Libertadores to eliminate the current champion in a knockout round 4 times. They surpassed Boca Juniors, who has done it 3 times.

*In addition, Olimpia have dethroned the champions in all possible rounds: in round of 16 (Flamengo, 2023), in quarterfinals (Boca Juniors, 2002), in semifinals (Atlético Nacional, 1990) and in final (Boca Juniors, 1979).
Notably, at every time when Olimpia dethroned a champion they became the champions themselves!

*Olimpia are also the 3rd team in the Copa Libertadores history with the most comebacks. The last game vs Flamengo was the 19th time they have won a match (3-1) where they started losing (0-1).
Only River Plate (24) and Cerro Porteño (20) have more comebacks.

*Racing have overcome a two-legged tie after losing the first leg by 2+ goals difference (vs Atlético Nacional, 2-4 and 3-0) for the first time in their experience in CONMEBOL tournaments.

*Palmeiras became the first team in the entire history of Copa Libertadores to eliminate the same rival (Atletico Mineiro, 1-0 and 0-0) in 3 consecutive editions: 2021 (semifinals, by the away goal rule), 2022 (quarterfinals, on penalties) and 2023 (round of 16).

*Palmeiras have won 11 of their last 12 knock-out rivalries (including finals) in the Copa Libertadores.

*Boca Juniors who eliminated Nacional by shootouts (after two draws 0-0 and 2-2) set two new records of Copa Libertadores.
They have participated in most shootout series (14, surpassing Olimpia with 13) and have won most shootout series (9, surpassing Palmeiras with 8).

*From their side, Nacional have lost 5 of 6 shootout series in the Copa Libertadores (they could only beat Independente del Valle in 2020).
Of the teams which participated in a minimum of 4 shootouts, the Uruguayan club has the worst effectiveness (17%).

*Boca Juniors defender Luis Advíncula has scored his 3rd goal in this Copa Libertadores edition. It is the 4th time in the history of tournament when a defender of this club scores as much in the same edition (after Mouzo in 1977, Arruabarrena in 2000 and Schiavi in 2003).
Curiously, Boca won the Copa Libertadores every time when it happened.

*Deportivo Pereira (Colombia), after beating Independiente del Valle (1-0 and 1-1), became the first rookie team in Copa Libertadores over the last 10 years to reach the quarterfinals. The last debutants to do so were Tijuana and Garcilaso, both in 2013.
Other Colombian teams that reached this stage at their debut editions are Millonarios (1960), Santa Fe (1961), Tolima (1982) and Cúcuta (2007).

*Bolívar became the second Bolivian team to eliminate a Brazilian rival in a double-game rivalry (Athletico Paranaense, 3-1 and 0-2, win on shootouts) in the entire history of the Copa Libertadores.
Previously, only Jorge Wilstermann managed to do it vs Atlético Mineiro in 2017 (also round of 16).

*This is just the 2nd time in the Copa Libertadores history when a Bolivian team won the shootout series. The first case occurred on 10 May 2000; the same Bolívar beat Nacional.

*In the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores 2023 there will be representatives from 5 different countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay), the highest number since the 2016 edition (6 countries).
