JULIAN ALVAREZ IN THE TOP 12 !
Álvarez is 12th to collect two biggest prizes in same season
The Manchester City forward Julián Álvarez, even though he didn’t appear in the UCL final, has entered the list of players who became the winners of both World Cup and European Cup/Champions League in the same season.
Now this list includes 12 names. More than half of them (7) came from the same season 1973-74 when Bayern Munich formed a backbone of Bundesteam at their World triumph on the home soil.
One of those 7, Jupp Kapellmann, didn’t play at World Cup 1974 a single minute but still is a winner of the competition.
Since then, every World Cup season added not more than one player in the list. But it was always a Real Madrid player, until the current season when a new club representative, not from Munich and Madrid, has finally emerged.
The list had to be necessarily expanded anyway as the second finalist Inter also had in the squad an Argentine player (Lautaro Martinez), crowned the World champion in Qatar.
9 players of 12 appeared in both finals (World Cup and European Cup/Champions League). One exception more is Sami Khedira who missed the 2014 World Cup final.
