The statistics on 2022 World Cup day 17 (6 December)

*Morocco became the 4th African team to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup, after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.

*Morocco coach Walid Regragui became the first ever African coach to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

*Spain became the first team in World Cup history to lose 4 penalty shootouts. The next are England and Italy (3 lost shootouts each).

*It was Spain's 5th World Cup penalty shootout, the joint-most of any team, along with Argentina. 

*Morocco have won a penalty shootout for the first time in their history, at any tournament. They took part in 2 shootouts before, both in Africa Cup (lost to Algeria in 1988 and to Benin in 2019).

*Spain have only won 3 World Cup games (out of 11) since winning the title in South Africa (2010): vs Australia, vs Iran and vs Costa Rica.

*All 4 playoff games of Spain with Luis Enrique as a coach included extra-times: vs Croatia, Switzerland and Italy at 2020 Euro 2020, vs Morocco at 2022 World Cup.

*Gavi (Spain) became the youngest player (18 years 123 days) to start a knockout match at the World Cup since Pelé in 1958 (17 years 249 days).

*Portugal (6-1 vs Switzerland) is the first team to score 6+ goals in a World Cup round of 16 game since 5 June 1938 (Hungary vs Indonesia 6-0 and Brazil vs Poland 6-5).

*Switzerland hadn't conceded so many goals in any match since 1963 (1-8 against England in a friendly) and in a competitive match since the 1954 World Cup (5-7 vs Austria).

*Gonçalo Ramos became the first player to score a hat-trick on his first World Cup start since Miroslav Klose for Germany in 2002 (vs Saudi Arabia).

*Gonçalo Ramos is the first player with a hat-trick in a World Cup knockout match since Tomas Skuhravy (Czechoslovakia) in 1990 (vs Costa Rica in the round of 16).

*Gonçalo Ramos has scored a hat-trick and provided an assist, something that no one had achieved in the World Cup since Oleg Salenko (Russia, 5 goals and 1 assist) on 28 June 1994 against Cameroon.

*Gonçalo Ramos is the youngest player (21 years 169 days) to achieve a hat-trick in the World Cup since Florian Albert (20 years 261 days) for Hungary against Bulgaria on 3 June 1962.

*Gonçalo Ramos became the third youngest scorer to score a hat-trick in the playoff stage in the history of the World Cup, only behind Edmund Conen  (Germany, 19 years 198 days) in 1934 and Pelé (Brazil, 17 years 246 days) in 1958.

*Gonçalo Ramos is the 2nd player to score a hat-trick and provide an assist in a World Cup playoff game, after Angelo Schiavio (Italy, vs United States) in the round of 16  in 1934.

*For 4th time in World Cup history, the players of same country have scored a hat-trick in the consecutive editions (Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018 and Gonçalo Ramos in 2022). The precedents are: Óscar Míguez in 1950 and Carlos Borges in 1954 for Uruguay, Emilio Butragueño in 1986 and Míchel in 1990 for Spain, Gabriel Batistuta in 1994 and 1998 for Argentina.

*Gonçalo Ramos is the 2nd Portuguese player to score multiple goals in a World Cup knockout match, after Eusébio (4 goals) against North Korea in the 1966 quarter-final.

*Gonçalo Ramos is the 4th to score a World Cup hat-trick for Portugal, after Eusébio in 1966 vs North Korea (5-3), Pauleta in 2002 vs Poland (4-0) and Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018 vs Spain (3-3).

*Bruno Fernandes has been directly involved in 5 goals at the 2022 World Cup (2 goals and 3 assists); the most by a Portuguese player in a single edition of the tournament since 1966 (10 Eusébio and 6 José Torres).


*Pepe (Portugal) is the oldest ever player to score in a knockout stage game at the World Cup (39 years 283 days). He surpassed Roger Milla (Cameroon) who scored at the age of 38 years 34 days in 1990 (vs Colombia).

*The age difference between Pepe and Gonçalo Ramos (18 years 114 days) is the largest between two scorers in the same World Cup match since Russia vs Cameroon on 28 June 1994 when Roger Milla scored at 42 years 39 days and Dmitri Radchenko at 23 years 208 days (difference: 18 years 196 days).

*The round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup produced 28 goals; the most scored during this stage in a single edition of the tournament since the round of 16 was reintroduced in 1986 (excluding shootouts).
